Ruy Lopez

For sub-1000 ELO players

Against the Ruy Lopez (ECO C60), Black should use the Morphy Defense setup with ...a6, ...Nf6, and ...Be7 to challenge the bishop and finish development cleanly. Stockfish 17 at depth 25 still gives White a small edge in the Morphy Defense, but sub-1000 ELO Ruy Lopez players often lose momentum once Black chases the bishop and reaches a normal game.

The Best Response

Moves to Play

White · Black alternating

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bb5 a6
4. Ba4 Nf6
5. O-O Be7

Black questions the bishop immediately with ...a6, develops the knight, and prepares to castle. That removes the fear factor from the opening and turns the game into a normal fight for the center.

3 Mistakes Sub-1000 Players Make

These are the patterns we see in games below 1000 ELO. Fix these and you'll stop losing to this opening.

Leaving the bishop untouched

If Black never asks the bishop on b5 a question, White gets all the pressure they wanted. The simple pawn kick forces White to spend time on bishop moves instead of attacking.

Best reply: Re1
Why it happens: Seeing a pin and assuming it must be endured

Fearing the e5 pawn pressure

Beginners defend the e5 pawn too passively and fall behind in development. The best answer is usually to develop and make White prove the pressure matters.

Best reply: d3
Why it happens: Looking at the e5 pawn and forgetting Black also gets active piece play

Staying uncastled too long

Sub-1000 defenders sometimes keep the king in the center because the opening feels tense. That gives White the initiative they were hoping for.

Best reply: Bxc6
Why it happens: Thinking one more pawn move matters more than finishing development

Why This Opening Trips You Up

The Core Problem

Sub-1000 players often lose to the Ruy Lopez before the middlegame because the bishop pin looks more dangerous than it is.

Before Your Next Game

Do not treat the Spanish like a crisis. Play ...a6, develop normally, and make White show a real threat.

What to Study

Practice the Morphy Defense setup until ...a6, ...Nf6, and ...Be7 feel automatic under time pressure.
