Evans Gambit

For sub-1000 ELO players

The Evans Gambit (ECO C51) sacrifices the b4 pawn to rip open the center and develop with tempo after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4. Stockfish 17 at depth 25 confirms the Main Line with 5. c3 and 6. d4 as White's strongest continuation, giving a massive development lead. The most common mistake at sub-1000 ELO is accepting the gambit and then trying to hold the pawn instead of giving it back to catch up in development.

The Best Response

Moves to Play

White · Black alternating

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bc4 Bc5
4. b4 Bxb4
5. c3 Ba5
6. d4 exd4

White plays the Italian Game setup and then sacrifices the b-pawn with b4. After Black takes, White plays c3 and d4 to build a huge pawn center and open lines for the pieces. Black retreats the bishop to a5 and White gets rapid development.

Who Stands Better

+0.2

(slight advantage for White)

In plain terms+0.2 objectively, but at sub-1000 ELO White wins far more often due to the attacking chances

Copy these moves:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4 Bxb4 5. c3 Ba5 6. d4 exd4 7. O-O

3 Mistakes Sub-1000 Players Make

These are the patterns we see in games below 1000 ELO. Fix these and you'll stop losing to this opening.

Trying to Hold the Gambit Pawn

As Black, beginners grab the b4 pawn and then waste moves trying to keep it. Meanwhile White builds a massive center with c3 and d4 and develops every piece with tempo. The extra pawn is worthless if you are three moves behind.

Best reply: Bxf7+
Why it happens: Counting material instead of counting development

Not Playing d4 as White

Some White players sacrifice b4 and then play passively. The entire point of the Evans Gambit is c3 followed by d4 to blast open the center. Without d4, the gambit is just a wasted pawn.

Best reply: Nxd4
Why it happens: Sacrificing a pawn but then being scared to follow through with the center push

Castling Too Late as White

After c3 and d4, White needs to castle quickly and bring the rooks into the game. Beginners keep pushing pawns and lose the initiative. Castling connects the rooks and adds fire to the open center.

Best reply: O-O
Why it happens: Pushing more pawns when the king needs to get safe and the rooks need to connect

Why This Opening Trips You Up

The Core Problem

Beginners are scared to sacrifice a pawn. But in the Evans Gambit, the pawn buys something more valuable: time and open lines. At sub-1000 ELO, development advantage wins more games than an extra pawn.

Before Your Next Game

After 4. b4 Bxb4 5. c3, play d4 on the next move no matter what. That is the entire plan. Do not overthink it.
