Four Knights Game
For sub-1000 ELO players
The Four Knights Game (ECO C47) develops all four knights early with 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6. Stockfish 17 at depth 25 confirms the Spanish Four Knights with 4. Bb5 as White's best way to play for an advantage through the Rubinstein Variation. The most common mistake at sub-1000 ELO is playing too passively after all four knights come out, when White should be grabbing space with d4 or pinning with Bb5.
The Best Response
Moves to Play
White · Black alternating
1. e4 e52. Nf3 Nc63. Nc3 Nf64. Bb5 Nd4Both sides develop their knights toward the center. White plays Bb5 to pin the knight on c6 and threaten to win the e5 pawn. Black often plays Nd4 to counter-attack the bishop, leading to sharp play.

Playing d3 Instead of d4
Beginners play d3 to protect e4, but it is passive and gives Black equal chances. The whole point of the Four Knights as White is to push d4 and open the center where the extra tempo matters.
Bxd7+Missing the Nxe5 Tactic
After 4. Bb5 Nd4, many beginners retreat the bishop. But Nxe5 is a strong move because after Qe7, Nf3 Nxb5 Nxb5, White has an extra pawn and active pieces.
Nxe5Trading Everything and Drifting Into a Draw
The Four Knights can become very symmetrical. Beginners trade pieces without a plan and end up in a dead draw. White needs to create imbalances with Bb5 or d4 before the position simplifies.
Nxd4Why This Opening Trips You Up
The Core Problem
The Four Knights looks boring and equal, so beginners play on autopilot. But the position has real tactical bite if White knows the right plans. The symmetry is an illusion.
Before Your Next Game
After all four knights are out, play Bb5. That one move creates real problems for Black and avoids the dead symmetry that leads to draws.
