French Winawer

For sub-1000 ELO players

The French Winawer (ECO C15) is a sharp line where Black pins the c3 knight with Bb4, creating immediate tension in the center. Stockfish 17 at depth 25 evaluates the Winawer Variation at +0.3 for White after the correct response of 4. e5. Sub-1000 ELO players as White often panic about the pin and make passive moves instead of advancing in the center and seizing space.

The Best Response

Moves to Play

White · Black alternating

1. e4 e6
2. d4 d5
3. Nc3 Bb4

White builds a classical center with e4 and d4, then develops the knight to c3 to defend e4. Black pins the knight with Bb4, the hallmark of the Winawer, threatening to double White's pawns and undermine the center.

3 Mistakes Sub-1000 Players Make

These are the patterns we see in games below 1000 ELO. Fix these and you'll stop losing to this opening.

Not advancing e5 to lock the center

Sub-1000 players see the Bb4 pin and freeze, trying to defend e4 passively instead of pushing e5 to gain space. They worry about the pin but miss that e5 shuts down Black's knight and gains a tempo.

Best reply: e5
Why it happens: White sees the bishop pinning the knight and thinks the knight needs protection, missing that e5 ignores the pin and gains a powerful space advantage.

Not challenging the Bb4 with a3

Beginners tolerate the Bb4 pin indefinitely, allowing Black to keep pressure on the knight. They do not realize that a3 forces Black to either retreat or trade, both of which help White.

Best reply: a3
Why it happens: White focuses on developing other pieces and ignores the bishop on b4, not seeing that a3 forces a favorable resolution of the pin.

Trading on d5 and releasing tension

Sub-1000 players instinctively trade pawns with exd5 to simplify the position. This opens the center for Black's pieces and removes White's space advantage entirely.

Best reply: Ne2
Why it happens: White sees pawn tension and wants to resolve it, not realizing that maintaining the tension with a developing move like Ne2 keeps White's spatial edge and prepares to recapture on c3 with the knight.

Why This Opening Trips You Up

The Core Problem

Sub-1000 players are uncomfortable with the Bb4 pin and spend too much time trying to resolve it passively, missing that bold central advances like e5 are the correct response.

Before Your Next Game

When you see Bb4 in the Winawer, do not panic about the pin. Play e5 with confidence. The pin is temporary, but your space advantage is permanent. Follow up with a3 to force the bishop to commit.

What to Study

Study the main line 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 and practice playing with the doubled c-pawns. Focus on using the bishop pair and the e5 pawn to create kingside attacks.
