Queen's Gambit
For sub-1000 ELO players
Against the Queen's Gambit (ECO D06), Black should keep things simple with the Queen's Gambit Declined setup of ...e6, ...Nf6, and ...Be7 before striking back in the center. Stockfish 17 at depth 25 gives White only a small pull in the Queen's Gambit Declined, and sub-1000 ELO gambit players often get frustrated when Black refuses the drama and just challenges the center on solid terms.
The Best Response
Moves to Play
White · Black alternating
1. d4 d52. c4 e63. Nc3 Nf64. Bg5 Be75. e3 O-OBlack declines the gambit, finishes development, and prepares to hit back with ...c5 or ...Nbd7. That stops White from enjoying a free initiative just because the c-pawn moved early.

These are the patterns we see in games below 1000 ELO. Fix these and you'll stop losing to this opening.
Leaving the center untouched
Many players defend passively and let White own the whole board. The Queen's Gambit is much easier to face when Black challenges the center instead of just watching it grow.
Nf3Allowing the pin forever
If Black never questions the bishop on g5, White keeps a comfortable grip on the position. A small pawn move often forces White to choose instead of getting everything for free.
Bd3Delaying queenside development
Sub-1000 defenders often copy moves on the king side and forget the queenside pieces. Without that support, Black never gets the break that solves the opening.
cxd5Why This Opening Trips You Up
The Core Problem
Sub-1000 players respect the word gambit too much and start defending before anything bad has happened.
Before Your Next Game
Do not grab random pawns or play scared. Build the Queen's Gambit Declined shell and hit the center when your pieces are ready.
