Reti Opening
For sub-1000 ELO players
Against the Reti Opening (ECO A04), Black should maintain the d5 pawn and develop solidly with ...e6, ...Nf6, and ...Be7, steering into King's Indian Attack territory. Stockfish 17 at depth 25 gives White only a +0.3 edge, and sub-1000 players often mishandle the position by either ignoring the c4 pressure on d5 or overreacting with a premature ...d4 push.
The Best Response
Moves to Play
White · Black alternating
1. Nf3 d52. c4 e63. g3 Nf64. Bg2White delays d4 and instead fianchettoes the bishop to g2, putting long-term pressure on d5. The c4 pawn challenges Black's center indirectly. Black should support d5 with ...e6 and develop naturally, avoiding premature pawn advances.

These are the patterns we see in games below 1000 ELO. Fix these and you'll stop losing to this opening.
Ignoring the c4 Pressure
Beginners leave d5 hanging by developing without protecting it. Once White captures on d5, the g2 bishop comes alive on the long diagonal and Black loses central control.
dxc4Playing d4 Prematurely
Beginners push ...d4 thinking they are seizing space, but the pawn becomes a target. White plays around it with b3 and Bb2, putting both bishops on powerful diagonals aimed at the overextended pawn.
b6Passive Kingside Development
Beginners develop without a concrete plan, placing pieces on safe but inactive squares. White castles and slowly expands with d3 and e4, gaining space in the center while Black watches.
e5Why This Opening Trips You Up
The Core Problem
Sub-1000 players are confused by the Reti because White does not play d4 early. They either ignore the c4 pressure entirely or overreact with ...d4, both of which give White exactly what the opening wants.
Before Your Next Game
Stay calm against the Reti. Protect d5 with ...e6, develop your pieces naturally, and castle. You do not need to do anything dramatic. The position is close to equal if you just play solid chess.
What to Study
Practice positions where White fianchettoes to g2 and plays c4. Learn to recognize when ...d4 helps Black versus when it just creates a target. Focus on maintaining a solid center.
