Grob Attack

For sub-1000 ELO players

The Grob Attack (ECO A00) starts with the unusual 1. g4, pushing a wing pawn instead of fighting for the center. Stockfish 17 at depth 25 evaluates this position at roughly -0.5 after the Kolibri Variation with 1. g4 d5 2. Bg2 Bxg4, meaning Black already has a clear advantage. Sub-1000 ELO players as Black often fail to punish this opening because they do not realize 2...Bxg4 wins a free pawn.

The Best Response

Moves to Play

White · Black alternating

1. g4 d5
2. Bg2 Bxg4

White opens with the eccentric 1. g4, weakening the kingside and ignoring the center. Black plays 1...d5 to seize central space immediately. White follows with 2. Bg2, developing the bishop to the long diagonal, but 2...Bxg4 simply wins the g4 pawn for free since the bishop on c8 is now unblocked after the d-pawn moved.

Who Stands Better

-0.5

(slight advantage for White)

In plain termsBlack is up roughly half a pawn (-0.5) with a material advantage and better central control after capturing the g4 pawn.

3 Mistakes Sub-1000 Players Make

These are the patterns we see in games below 1000 ELO. Fix these and you'll stop losing to this opening.

Not taking the free pawn

Sub-1000 players often hesitate to take the g4 pawn with their bishop. They worry it might be a trap, but it is simply a free pawn with no compensation for White.

Best reply: Bxd5
Why it happens: Black sees the pawn on g4 but assumes White must have a trick planned, when in reality the pawn is just hanging with no tactical justification.

Playing too passively as Black

Beginners sometimes respond to unusual openings by playing timidly. Against the Grob, they might play quiet moves instead of grabbing the center immediately with d5.

Best reply: d4
Why it happens: Black does not realize that White has completely ignored the center, so d5 gives Black a dominant central pawn with no resistance.

Overextending on the kingside

Some sub-1000 players try to mirror White's aggression on the kingside instead of building a solid center. They push pawns forward when steady development is stronger.

Best reply: c3
Why it happens: Black misses that c6 solidifies the d5 pawn and prepares smooth development with Nf6, Bf5, and e6, giving a rock-solid position against White's weakened kingside.

Why This Opening Trips You Up

The Core Problem

The Grob Attack looks scary because beginners rarely see 1. g4. They freeze up or play random moves instead of grabbing the center and taking the free pawn on g4.

Before Your Next Game

When your opponent plays a weird opening like 1. g4, remind yourself that weird does not mean strong. Play d5 for the center, and take any free pawns. Simple chess wins here.

What to Study

Play through the line 1. g4 d5 2. Bg2 Bxg4 three times against a bot. Focus on taking the free pawn and then developing normally with Nf6, c6, and e6.
